IntelliJ plugins: JetBrains AI Assistant Experimental Features

I’m not a big fan of AI assistants, but if you have a paid plan for the JetBrains AI Assistant (directly, of if you have the JetBrains All Products Pack), you may want to try the new “JetBrains AI Assistant Experimental Features” plugin.

It works with IntelliJ 2026.1 EAP and currently adds three new, experimental features. According to JetBrains:

  • The Recap feature automatically generates a summary of your recent work to speed up context restoration.
  • The Insights feature analyzes the currently opened file and generates brief and concise summaries for pieces of code that are hard to interpret at first glance.
  • The Group with AI feature is intended to speed up the review and validation process.

See the official documentation.

Most of these features are already supported by various 3rd-party plugins, but this time it’s integrated into the AI Assistant. It may be worth trying if you already have a paid subscription.

In my opinion, it is wiser to rely primarily on official JetBrains plugins and those from 3rd-party developers you trust, rather than on the multitude of completely unknown developers who flood the marketplace with an unbelievable number of (mostly AI/LLM) plugins. Keep in mind that a plugin can do anything it wants on your computer.
